The knowledge of astronomy, physics etc. has enabled man to know much about stars and planet essay on race discrimination, their behavior, their motions etc. Today special attention is paid to the future space travel technologies which will give an opportunity to travel in the outer space rather frequently. It is known that one of the leading space companies Astrium “has been awarded a contract by the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop key technologies for new re-ignitable upper stages for new launchers” (Astrium Selected To Develop Key TechnologiesFor Future Space Missions ). Under this contract, which worth about euros 20 million the company will be involved in development of advanced technologies to travel outer space. FUTURE SPACE TRAVEL TECHNOLOGIES The other well-known space company NASA also tried to do everything possible to provide safe space travels for everyone who has a desire to enter the outer space. The company’s mission is “to reach for new heights and reveal the unknown so that what we do and learn will benefit all humankind” (NASA persuasive essay topic help, Official Site). It is found that in 2011, NASA “picked up a deep space atomic clock, a giant solar sail design and a novel laser communications system as the must-have technologies to help future space exploration” (Wall). This space company has a great deal of other effective engineering projects for the future space missions. It is possible to predict that technology is headed to the deeper space exploration with wider opportunity to space travel. The chief technologist of NASA, Bobby Brawn states that new technology will improve space communications and navigation, as well as the in-space propulsion capabilities which will enable future space travel (Wall). In the book Future Hype: The Myths of Technology Change written by Bob Seidensticker, the author is excited about the future possibilities of technology. He states that the most difficult projections related to the future involve the impact of technology on the daily lives of human beings (Seidensticker 25). However, the author comes to the conclusion that “the popular view of technological change is wrong and the future won’t be so shocking” (Seidensticker 1). SPACE TRAVEL TODAY It is known that today our society can be rightfully called a technologically developed society because the impact of new technologies can be found in all spheres of human activity. Most people on our planet are sure that it is impossible to live happily without technology. Moreover, it is necessary to conclude that today all people on our planet are much dependent on technology. Technological advancement can lead to serious changes in the life of humanity as due to new technologies it is possible to find the way out in space and meet other civilizations. The digital nation is closely connected with digital world where the main role is given to computers and new information technologies. The moon was the first target of man. Scientists know that there is no air or water on the moon. It is about 30 feminism essay,0000 kms from the earth. This distance can be covered in ten hours if a spaceship moves at a speed of 40 samples of business essays,000 kms an hours. The surface of the moon is rough and full of craters introduction of essay about internet, rocks and mountains. In olden days man worshipped Sun and Moon thinking them to be scared. But the scientists proved that the Sun is a star and the moon is a planet like other planets. After the atomic age man has entered the age of space travel. The 1990’s brought about many future ideas. While there are many different organizations that contribute to the future technology of space, NASA probably does the most. Under this organization assignment in if javascript, the Advanced Space Transportation Program supports the long-range basic research. This consists of airframe propulsion and long-term space transportation research. They have put forth many ideas. One example of this is the rocket engine. This would consume oxygen in the air and store liquid oxygen when it leaves the atmosphere (Glenn and Robinson 72). Hence, there would be significant savings because not as much propellant would be required to make it run. Another idea would be to launch rockets into space using laser beams. Laser Propulsion testing indicates a viable way to reduce money of sending men into space. Lastly, the Solar Thermal Propulsion is another idea for the future of space exploration. This would propel vehicles through space and significantly reduces weight, complexity, and money (Glenn and Robinson 104). Since the beginning of time, man has been fascinated with the stars and sky. From the time the first man took his first step on the moon, space exploration has been growing and expanding. More and more people are coming up with new ways on how to study the universe. Hence, the more time spent on studying the sky, the more that we will obviously know. So what is an application essay, it would be safe to say that now is a great time to continue the exploration of space. The 1990’s contributed to the study of space with new technology customer service case studies pdf, intelligent astronauts, and future ideas. On January 10, 2007 India launched PSLV-C7 successfully. India’s communication satellite INSAT-4B was launched successfully on March 12, 2007. On April 23, 2007, India’s first commercial space launch. PSLV-C8 carried an Italian Space Agencies AGILE Satellite in the space and placed it in orbit 550 Km above the earth. In May 2008, ISRO launched PSLV-C9 successfully. It is the first time in India that PSLV took off from spaceport to place 10 satellites into their orbits. India became the second country to achieve this difficult feat after Russia. In 2008, PSLV-10 was launched successfully, its satellite is known as Israeli Spy Satellite. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was formed in 1969. The first Indian satellite Aryabhatta, was launched from a Soviet cosmodrame in 1975. India launched in INSAT (Indian National Satellite) system for the expansion of television, radio, telecommunications and meteorological services. INSAT system is one of the largest domestic communication satellite systems in the Asia-Pacific region. in 1999, the Indian Remote Sensing Satellite was launched successfully by PSLV (Polar Satellite Lauch Vehicle). Thereafter, there have been many successful launches of both INSAT and PSLV. On October 22 best topics to research, 2008 India launched PSLV-11 Chandrayan 1 successfully. On November 14, 2008 the Indian tricolor landed on the Moon. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLYV-C12) of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully placed two satellites-Rader Imaging Satellite (RISAT-2) and ANUSAT-in the desired orbit on April 20, 2009. Yuri Gagarin of Russia became the first man to go into space. Man has landed on the moon and he is trying to find out the existence of life on other planets. Telecommunication, weather forecasting, radio and television programmes etc. are all monitored by satellites in space. There are also military stations and spy satellites in space which pose a threat of a nuclear war. This should be avoided and scientists should work for the benefit of mankind. Satellites and spacecrafts have been launched for various purposes. The atmosphere in space is used for television programmes, radio broadcasts, telecommunication personal statement for admission, etc. Satellites provide advanced disaster warning and help to forecast the weather. Distance educational programmes, natural resources management, etc. are controlled by satellites. Space research can help us to find the origin of the universe, the age of our earth and other planets. Information has already been gathered about Mars. It will help us to find out whether life exists on planets of the universe other than the earth. Man’s curiosity for knowledge has led him to explore space. Space contains the planets, countless galaxies and milky ways. Man has been able to go to space and collect pictures of the sun, the planets and the moon. The first man made satellite Sputnik-1 was sent into space by Russia in 1957. The second point to make is that there are many much more urgent projects on Earth that require investment. If governments spent less money on space research, then they would be able to help solve some of these problems such as population control, elimination of diseases like cholera examples of business law research papers, global warming and food shortages. It seems to me that all of these issues are more important because they affect the lives of millions of ordinary people. An illustration of this is that the US government could provide food for all the starving people in the world if they did not spend so much on NASA. Jennifer Garner writes “Turning Poverty Around: Training Parents to Help Their Kids” and Jada Pinkett Smith penned the essay “Human Trafficking and Slavery in the United States: ‘You Don’t See the Chains.'” “Today, women make up half of the U.S. workforce, but the average working woman earns only 77 percent of what the average working man makes,” she writes, under the name Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. “But unless women and men both say this is unacceptable, things will not change.” RELATED: Destiny’s Child Reunites – As Karaoke Party Crashers We live the gender stereotype without even realising it. From an early age compulsory education essay, we are conditioned to believe that our sons must wear blue and our daughters must wear pink. We are disillusioned to believe that we must fit into these socially constructed brackets of so-called “gender roles”. Realistically, we should not feel the need to conform to these ideals as they do not define us as human beings. What society fails to realise is that we are not all limited to these traditional gender roles. Gender equality is not just an issue for women. Men are also stereotyped by gender roles and as Emma Watson passionately outlined in her HeForShe speech, gender equality is not just a woman’s issue but men’s too. Every boy, man, girl, woman in this world has a right to gender equality. If women are given the opportunity to believe that they can achieve the things that men can then we would be one step closer to attaining gender equality. Every human being should be entitled to these equal rights. Secondly, it has been argued that women are less appreciated in society due to their traditional roles in the home. This statement is true to a certain extent because it largely depends on the society. In certain traditional societies in Africa, females working is frowned upon and is seen as neglecting the family, whereas in Afghanistan, in general, females are allowed to do little else but stay at home, being a housewife. Consequently a woman’s value is largely dictated by the society, culture and history. Nevertheless, to state that her place is in the home is widely considered sexist in modern western societies. Women can do everything that men can and they even do it better. They also can do many things that men cannot. But it is a fact that their work is not appreciated as much as men’s, although they have to sacrifice a lot for their family and career… It is said: "A woman’s place is in the home." What do you think? bw 2017-03-12T19:57:38+00:00 In addition, virtue ethics has its strengths. The strengths of virtue ethics include the significance of personal integrity. The major strength of virtue ethics is that it provides an opportunity to individuals to make decisions. Moreover contests essay, virtue ethics is closely connected with practical ethics, reinforcing the autonomy of individuals (Louden, 2013). The issue of gender equality can be discussed based on the application of various ethical theories, including utilitarianism, virtue ethics and feminine ethics. Using the core principles of each of the above mentioned theories; it is possible to prove the fact that the issue of gender equality is an ethical issue that requires a comprehensive moral answer. There are both strengths and weaknesses, which can be identified for each of the ethical theories as applied to the issue of gender equality. In order to identify the ethical theory that provides the most satisfactory moral answer to the issue, it is necessary to refer to the strengths of ethical theories discussed in the previous section of the paper. To start with pay to write college essay, the strengths of utilitarianism include two important characteristics of the theory. First, utilitarianism is “a single principle, an absolute system with a potential answer for every situation” (Pojman difference between article and journal, 2004, p. 120). Second, this theory “seems to get to the substance of morality”(Pojman, 2004, p. 120). These strengths are focused on the usefulness of actions. В В В В В В В В В В В In order to identify the ethical theory that provides the least satisfactory answer to the issue of gender equality, it is necessary to refer to the weaknesses of ethical theories. The major weakness of utilitarianism as applied to the conception of equality is that it is focused on certain rights and obligations and fair shares of resources. The weakness of virtue ethics is that this theory is not oriented to principle-based ethics. Virtue ethics may create certain social problems (Louden, 2013). The weakness of feminine theory is focused on the fact that it deals only with oppression and discrimination of women. Taking into consideration of the weaknesses of the ethical theories discussed in the paper, it is possible to identify the ethical theory that provides the least satisfactory answer to the issue of gender equality. Besides, the issue of gender equality depends on the role of political authorities in finding the proper solutions. Marilyn Friedman (2003) pays due attention to the issue of gender quality in the book Autonomy, Gender, Politics. The author discusses this issue highlighting the role of government in various practices of a cultural minority within the society, in which women’s rights are violated (Friedman, 2003). According to Marilyn Friedman (2003), “equality, rights, autonomy, justice, and liberty are all variously interpreted by liberals themselves”(p. 182). The author believes that liberal government and liberalism in general provide many solutions to the dilemma of equality of cultural minorities, namely the issue of women’s rights. Utilitarianism is considered to be an ethical theory that helps to determine the rightness/ or wrongness of some issue on the basis of an estimated outcome. In other words, utilitarianism is focused on usefulness of something or somebody’s actions rather than on moral obligation or moral duty (Jaggar, 2010; Louden, 2013). In the case of gender equality, utilitarianism places emphasis on the outcomes of gender relations. According to this ethical theory, the rightness/ or wrongness of human actions that reflect gender inequality can be determined by the need for assessing the outcomes. From women’s point of view, gender inequality brings evil consequences because women’s rights are limited, and women’s independence is limited. Pages: Word count: Rewriting Possibility: % ( ) The United Nations Population Fund has declared that men and women have a right to equality.[15] “Gender equity” is one of the goals of the United Nations Millennium Project an argument essay structure, to end world poverty by 2015; the project claims, “Every single Goal is directly related to women’s rights, and societies where women are not afforded equal rights as men can never achieve development in a sustainable manner.”[13] Maternal mortality is a major problem in many parts of the world. UNFPA states that countries have an obligation to protect women’s right to health, but many countries do not do that.[19] Maternal mortality is considered today not just an issue of development, but also an issue of human rights.[20] According to UNFPA: “Preventable maternal mortality occurs where there is a failure to give effect to the rights of women to health, equality and non-discrimination. Preventable maternal mortality also often represents a violation of a woman’s right to life.” The right to reproductive and sexual autonomy is denied to women in many parts of the world, through practices such as forced sterilization, forced/coerced sexual partnering (eg forced marriage, child marriage) cover letter to resume template, criminalization of consensual sexual acts (such as sex outside marriage) my family problems essay, lack of criminalization of marital rape academic journals database, violence in regard to the choice of partner (honor killings as punishment for ‘inappropriate’ relations). The criminalization of adultery has been criticized as being a prohibition, which, in law or in practice, is used primarily against women; and incites violence against women (crimes of passion, honor killings). A Joint Statement by the United Nations Working Group on discrimination against women in law and in practice in 2012 stated:[36] “the United Nations Working Group on discrimination against women in law and in practice is deeply concerned at the criminalization and penalization of adultery whose enforcement leads to discrimination and violence against women.” UN Women also stated that “Drafters should repeal any criminal offenses related to adultery or extramarital sex between consenting adults”. Violence against women “Education is important for everyone, but it is especially significant for girls and women. This is true not only because education is an entry point to other opportunities, but also because the educational achievements of women can have ripple effects within the family and across generations. Investing in girls’ education is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty.” Economic empowerment of women Violence and mistreatment of women in relation to marriage has come to international attention during the past decades. This includes both violence committed inside marriage (domestic violence) as well as violence related to marriage customs and traditions (such as dowry, bride price online service writing college papers, forced marriage and child marriage). Violence against a wife continues to be seen as legally acceptable in some countries; for instance in 2010, the United Arab Emirates’s Supreme Court ruled that a man has the right to physically discipline his wife and children as long as he does not leave physical marks. Taking gender concerns into account when designing and implementing population and development programmes therefore is important for two reasons. First, there are differences between the roles of men and women good essay examples for college, differences that demand different approaches. Second, there is systemic inequality between men and women. Men also have the right to assume a more nurturing role, and opportunities for them to do so should be promoted. Equally, however, men have responsibilities in regard to child health and to their own and their partners’ sexual and reproductive health. Addressing these rights and responsibilities entails recognizing men’s specific health problems, as well as their needs and the conditions that shape them. The adoption of a gender perspective is an important first step; it reveals that there are disadvantages and costs to men accruing from patterns of gender difference. It also underscores that gender equality is concerned not only with the roles, responsibilities and needs of women and men, but also with the interrelationships between them. Gender equality is intrinsically linked to sustainable development and is vital to the realization of human rights for all. The overall objective of gender equality is a society in which women and men enjoy the same opportunities, rights and obligations in all spheres of life. Equality between men and women exists when both sexes are able to share equally in the distribution of power and influence; have equal opportunities for financial independence through work or through setting up businesses; enjoy equal access to education and the opportunity to develop personal ambitions, interests and talents; share responsibility for the home and children and are completely free from coercion, intimidation and gender-based violence both at work and at home. Custom Student Mr. Teacher ENG 1001-04 28 March 2016 Type of paper: Thesis/Dissertation Chapter Another area of gender equality is suffrage (the right to vote). This area of gender equality does not extend to all the women in the world. Women in Saudi Arabia does not have the right t to vote; in the USA right wing commentators say that women should never have been given the right to vote(IPPF.Org). Other discrimination against women and girls includes gender-based violence, economic discrimination, and reproductive health inequities. A key topic has been women’s rights affording the ability to control their own fertility. This is absolutely fundamental to women’s empowerment and equality. When a woman can plan her family, she can plan the rest of her life. When she is healthy, she can be more productive. And when her reproductive right, which includes the right to decide the number, timing and spacing of her children, and to make decisions regarding reproduction free of discrimination, coercion, or violence. A limited time offer! Global warming has really affected and forced the climate to change over the last century throughout the world. Unusual increase in the earth’s average temperature is because of the high amount of greenhouse gases release due to burning fossil fuels and other human activities. Some of the green house gases having more influence on the climate are CO2 essay math, water vapour, dinitrogen-oxide, and methane. According to the research, it has been recorded that almost 30 percent of the heat by incoming sunlight gets reflected back to the space through clouds and ice but because of global warming ice are melting. It means there are no left sources to send heat back to the space and all are getting collected in the earth atmosphere and affecting the climate. There are many reasons behind climate change, some are natural and some are human activities. Climate change is not area or region specific, it s changing all through the world. Climate change occurs when atmospheric temperatures increase a lot which in turn causes many different changes to the earth such as more floods, intense rain, droughts, increase in rate of more frequent and severe heat waves, increase level of oceans good statement thesis, melting glaciers, warming oceans, sea water becoming more acidic, and so many. All these changes may become more frequent in the future decades and hugely challenge the society and environment. Climatic changes have become more prominent now because of the global warming which is a global concern. Both are hot issues of the current time and it is the time to analyse causes and prevention methods to prevent the global warming. The release of various green house gases in the atmosphere by many natural means and human activities causes increase in atmospheric temperature because such gases have capability to absorb all the heat of environment from sun, burning coal, etc. Such gases never let sun rays to go back to the atmosphere however trap heat from them. Burning coal, oil and natural gases are the main cause of global warming. CO2 gas acts as a blanket which retains environmental heat and warms the earth’s surface. The level of carbon dioxide has become increased to a great level in last century. The earth surface has become successively warmer than ever in the last three decades. Each month is becoming warmer than ever which we can feel very clearly. This increasing heat affecting the lives of human beings, plants and animals even many species have been endangered. Climate has changed from cooler to warmer over the last two million years in the cyclical manner. Sun is the ultimate source of heat energy which fuelling the weather systems after reaching to the earth. Earlier the harsh and extended bitter cold season was called as the little ice age which was due to the huge level variations in the solar activity. It is found that the positive human activities may play major roles in shaping earth’s climate. Such a huge variations in the climate may lead to the danger of the human lives. Earlier it was believed that shifts in the climate pattern from ice age to warmer periods was because of time however later it was imagined that it is due to regular melting of ice sheets of more than a kilometre in thickness. Our climate is getting warm rapidly by the rate of approximately 8°C over the course of 10 years. Finally, human should stop open burning such as burning dry leafs or burning garbage. It will release carbon dioxide and toxic if burning garbage with plastic. Besides, government should reduce deforestation because the earth temperatures are increasing. Trees will help to improve the temperature on earth. The greenhouse gases will stay in the atmosphere for many years since hundreds years ago. However, the effect that global warming will cause on earth are extremely serious. There are many effects that will happen in the future if global warming continues. That includes polar ice caps melting, economic consequences examples of a case study report, warmer waters and more hurricanes, spread of diseases and earthquake Another issue is mining. During the process of mining, the methane will trap below the earth. Besides, rearing cattle will also cause methane because cattle released the form of manure. However, cattle is important because it make the latter equally responsible for the occurrence of global warming Next effect is more hurricanes will occur and economic consequences still affect as well. Hurricane causes damage to houses and government need to spend billions of dollars in damage and people need places to stay or have been killed. Once a disaster happens many people have died and diseases happen. Diseases are more serious because it can spread to other people very fast and more people will get the disease and the disease maybe come more serious because of different weather. Finally, methane is another issue that causes global warming. Methane is also a greenhouse gas. Methane is more effective in trapping heat in the atmosphere that carbon dioxide by 20 times. Usually methane gas can release from many areas. For instance introduction to an essay, it can be from cattle, landfill, natural gas, petroleum systems, coal mining, mobile explosion, or industrial waste process. First issue is industrial revolution. Industrial have been using fossil fuels for power machines. Everything that we use is involved in fossil fuel. For example, when we buy a mobile phone, the process of making mobile phone have involve machines and machines uses fossil fuels, during the process carbon dioxide is releasing to the atmosphere. Besides industrial, transportation such as cars is also releasing carbon dioxide from exhaust. Another effect is the species loss of habitat. Species that include polar bears and tropical frogs will be extinct due to climate change. Besides, various birds will migrate to other places because animals are not like humans. They cannot adapt the habitat that changes their living or temperature. Rise in the CO2 level on the earth impacts the human life to a great level through continued heat waves, sudden occurrence of strong storms, unpredictable and unexpected cyclone, damage to ozone layer, floods, heavy rain, drought anne sexton essays, lack of food, diseases, death etc. It has been researched that increasing emissions of CO2 in the atmosphere is because of the nonstop burning of fossil fuels, usage of fertilizers, cutting forests, extra use of electricity, gases used in refrigerator etc. According to the statistics, it has been noted that by 2020 global warming may boom its bad effects if it is not taken under control as CO2 emissions are increasing continuously. Global warming is the big environmental issue we are facing today as a greatest challenge which we need to get it solved permanently. In fact, global warming is the continuous and steady process of increasing in the temperature of earth surface. It needs to be discussed widely by all countries worldwide to stop the effects of it. It has impacted the nature’s balance, biodiversity and climatic conditions of the earth over decades. Global warming is a major atmospheric issue all over the world. Our earth’s surface becoming hot day by day by trapping the sun’s heat and rise in the level of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The bad effects of it increasing day by day and causing major problems to the living of human being. It has become one of the subjects of big social issues which need social awareness to a great level. People should know its meaning, causes, effects and solutions to solve it immediately. People should come forth together and try to solve it in order to save life on the earth. Global warming causes lot of climate changes in the atmosphere such as increasing summer season, decreasing winter season essays about life goals, increasing temperature, changes in air circulation patterns, jet stream, rain without season, melting ice caps, declining ozone layer, occurrence of heavy storms, cyclones, flood, drought, and so many effects. Its threatening effects are increasing day by day and creating danger for human life. Global warming is the main and only reason of rising sea level, flooding, changes in weather patterns, storms, cyclone essay on civil war causes, epidemic diseases, lack of food, death, etc. The only solution to solve the issue of global warming is the individual level social awareness. People must be aware of its meaning, cause, bad effects and other things about global warming to get it eradicated from worldwide and make the possibilities of life on earth forever as usual. Effects of Global Warming Increasing global warming lead to the more water evaporation from earth into the atmosphere, which in turn become a greenhouse gas and again causes rise in the global warming. Other processes like burning of fossil fuels, use of fertilizers, rise in other gases like CFCs, tropospheric ozone and nitrous oxide are also the reasons of global warming. The ultimate causes of such reasons are the technological advancement, population explosion example of a good essay paper, increasing demand of industrial expansion essay writing year 5, deforestation, priority towards urbanization, etc. We are disturbing the natural processes through the deforestation and use of technological advancement like global carbon cycle, making hole in ozone layer, etc and allowing the UV rays to come on earth thus increasing global warming. Plants are the ultimate source of removing extra carbon dioxide from the air and making it in balance thus by just stopping the deforestation and enhancing people for more plantation we can get success of reducing the global warming to a great level. Controlling the population growth is also a great hand towards reducing the global warming all through the world as it lessens the use of destructive technologies on the earth. Before planning the solutions of the global warming, we must think about the causes and effects of it on the atmosphere in order to get sure that we are in right direction of getting full relief from this issue. The continuous warming of the earth surface is the increasing emission of CO2 in the environment. However, the increasing level of CO2 is caused due to many reasons like deforestation, use of coal, oil, gas cheap resume writer service, burning of fossil fuels, burning of gasoline for transportation, unnecessary use of electricity, etc which in turn causes rise in earth temperature. Again it becomes the reason of rising sea level, occurrence of flooding, storms, cyclone, ozone layer damage, changing weather patterns, fear of epidemic diseases, lack of food, death, etc. We cannot blame any single entity for this as each and every human being is responsible for the increasing threat of global warming which can be solved only by the global awareness and kind efforts of everyone. Green house gases like CO2 thesis in economics examples, methane are the main reasons of increasing the global warming on the earth which directly impacts the rising sea levels, melting ice caps, glaciers, unexpected changing climate which represents life threats on the earth. According to the statistic, it has been estimated that earth temperature has increased to a great level since mid 20 th century due to the increased atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations globally because of the increased demand of the human living standard. What are the causes of global warming and what measures can governments and individuals take to tackle the issue? IELTS Global Warming Essay - Model Answer Here is the question: You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Nevertheless, there are potential ways to solve these problems, or at least reduce the effects. Firstly, governments need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and promote alternatives. Plant-derived plastics, biodiesel, wind power and solar power are all things that are a step in the right direction, but governments need to enforce the limits on CO2 emissions for the polluting industries in their countries for these to be effective. Also, individuals can play a part by making lifestyle changes. People should try to buy cars with the best fuel economy, and only use their car when really necessary. They can also switch to energy companies that use renewable energy rather than fossil fuels. Finally, small things like buying energy efficient light bulbs, turning off electricity in the house, and planting trees in the garden can help. However, you could write a separate paragraph about each of the above points if you wanted. There are many gases in the Earth’s atmosphere, but many are natural and harmless. CO2, however, is not healthy for the atmosphere. CO2 remains in the atmosphere longer than other gases and traps in heat extremely well. Even a slight increase in CO2 in the atmosphere can cause significant increases in global temperatures. Most CO2 emissions come from the burning of fossil fuels. Cars and other vehicles can produce up to 1.5 billion tons of CO2 annually, and coal-burning power plants can produce 2.5 billion tons. Sadly, the United States is responsible for a great deal of these emissions. And though the U.S. is doing their best to rectify this problem by lowering their emission rates, other countries are doing the opposite. The thickening of earth atmosphere because of presence of increased carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is called greenhouse effect. There is uncertainty regarding regional forecasts of future precipitation as warming of globe makes it difficult to predict. Also, pattern of agricultural changes, or effects on ecosystems in general are fairly unpredictable. 2. Sea Level Change: One major consequence of global warming arising out of greenhouse effect is the rise in sea level. Four major changes take place prior to this. They are: Thermal expansion, mountain glacier melting, Greenland ice sheet melting and Polar (Arctic and Antarctic) ice sheet melting. Thus, the coastal cities and ports may be submerged under sea-water. Many islands may vanish from the earth surface as well as from the world map. How to Write a Good Lab Conclusion in Science How to Do a Simple Heat Conduction Experiment How to Find Valence Electrons Proofread. Always take the time to proofread your report before handing it in. Keep in mind that your word processor's spell checker will not pick up on misused words. [18] 5. Sample Calculations: II. Laboratory Report Format 7. Tabulated Results: These sections should be somewhat self-explanatory from their headings. Pay particular attention to the theory section. It will be helpful to you during the actual performing of the experiment and also when you write your lab report. The theory section contains definitions of terms, nomenclature my personal qualities essay, necessary formulas, wiring diagrams ielts essays internet, equipment illustrations, and expected graphical results. It supplements both the Procedure section and the Analysis section. Everyone is expected to read the assigned experiment before coming to lab. The lab will run more smoothly and the whole lab experience should be more satisfying if you read the write-up ahead of time. Typically, before the lab think positive essays, you draw up the data table in which you will record your data. The lab report should contain a neater version of your actual data table but should reference the actual data table as an appendix. This is a short section that shows a sample of every calculation that you carried out by hand. In essence this is a list of equations, but it goes one step further as it shows one example of every equation being used. Remember just one example of every equation used is to be shown. This is the second most important part of the lab. This is where you sum it all up. This is the punch line of this huge and massive joke-it needs to be good. The conclusion will include your results, any relationships (or equations) that you have discovered. Indicate how accurate your results are and explain any discrepancies. Make the lab instructor believe that you understand. The title should contain the name of the experiment performed, the date the experiment was performed, the names of all of the people who contributed to the lab report, and the name of the instructor of the lab. It is important that the names of all the people who contributed to the lab report be listed. Conversely, if a student did not contribute to the writing or analysis of the lab their name should not appear on the title page or in the title section. This is the meat of the lab report. This is where all of the science is. This is the heart of science-listen closely, you may hear it (thump. thump. thump). Quite simply the analysis is everything that you do between data collection and the writing of the conclusion. The analysis is the thought process that takes you from observation to brilliant insight. Most of the time the analysis is a lot of little steps that you go through mentally. It is important that you write these steps down. The analysis is not a list of numbers and calculations--I repeat the analysis is not a list of numbers and calculations. The analysis is the explaination of what you did, what you observed how to write a case study, possible sources of error (not just human-error applications of case study research, we all know your lab partner is a bumbling fool),explaination of meaningful statistics (don't include numbers if they don't mean anything). You can list final results in an analysis and include a description of what those numbers mean (you still have to report your findings and results in the Conclusion). A year later, our mothers discovered we were born in the same hospital in New Jersey, 1,600 miles away. He left a single red rose on my windshield. He wasn’t allowed to send me flowers at work, since my husband had died only six months before. His brown caramel eyes made my heart skip a beat for I had never seen anything so breathtaking. His skin was a russet color and his hair was a shady black. That first moment when we saw each other is engraved in my head. I can still hear my heart throbbing loudly in my chest as his eyes landed on me in that small room. We stared at each other as he made his way to the seat in front of me and a smile flicked on his lips to seal that moment. In 1983, I was traveling with a tiny theater company doing vaudeville-type shows in community centers and bars—anywhere we could earn $25 each plus enough gas money to get to the next small town in our ramshackle yellow bus. He shrugged. “Maybe someday you’ll forget.” We listen to their 20-something diatribes and smile. “I hope you have a wonderful life,” I told him. Fingers and chins numb with cold, we found refuge in a Four B’s Restaurant and sat across from each other in a red vinyl booth. We had enough money between us for a short stack of buckwheat pancakes. A few morning papers were delivered to the front door, and we worked our way through the crossword puzzle, coffee cups between our hands. I can’t endorse the idea of love at first sight, but maybe there are moments when God or fate or some cosmic sense of humor rolls its eyes at two stammering human hearts and says, “Oh, for crying out loud.” I married the bear a few months later in a meadow above his tiny cabin in the Bridger Mountains. We weren’t exempted from any of the hard work a long marriage demands, but for better or worse, in sickness and in health, that moment of unguarded, chinook-blown folly has somehow lasted 30 years. The bear held my hand inside his coat pocket as we walked in silence back to the parking lot to meet my company’s bus. Before he kissed me, he asked me if I was ready. Ready for what I have no idea, but ready is how I felt. I was stricken with readiness. Humbled by it. The bear stood there for a moment, an easy smile in his brown eyes. Then he put his arms around me and whispered in my ear, “I love you.” Matthew Mahon The sun came up, and we emerged from Four B’s to discover a warm chinook blowing in. Already the eaves were weeping, icicles thinning on trees and telephone wires. This is what Montana does in midwinter: clears off and gets bitter cold, and then suddenly it’s as warm and exhilarating as Easter morning. Don’t believe it for a minute, you tell yourself as the streets turn into trout streams, but the sheer pleasure of the feeling makes a fool of you. You forget your scarf and mittens on a hook behind the door. You know it’s still winter, but that’s just what you know; the chinook is what you believe in. “Excuse me?” I huffed, hackles raised. “Anyone who doesn’t think comedy is an art form certainly hasn’t read much Shakespeare, have they?” “Same could be said of bicycling in your ski gaiters.” Later that evening, as I did my shtick out on the foot-lit stage, I heard the bear’s distinctive baritone laughter from somewhere in the audience. After the show, he was waiting for me by the door. I didn’t bother asking him how he’d gotten there. He didn’t bother asking me where I wanted to go.

They have never met each other. They are brought together by Tom Hanks’ young son, who calls a radio show for lonely hearts. Anton Chekhov’s story Lady with the Pet Dog tells the story of Anna and Gurov, and it doesn’t quite fit the traditional love story formula. Of course, there are always conventions, even in innovative stories. The convention here is that Anna and Gurov want to be together, but of course, there’s an obstacle: they’re both married. Lady with the Dog depicts superficial glamour. Anna is a wealthy woman who lives a comfortable life. Her class is emphasized throughout the story. The innovation in this story is the relationship itself. Anna and Gurov are not in love for the sake of being in love; they both have other needs manifesting themselves as love. It seems unlikely that theirs will be a lasting relationship. Also innovative is the idea that Anna can be the "other woman" and still be a lady. She has class and morals: she’s not a "loose woman." She’s shown to be a likeable woman; she’s not a drug user or a psychopath, as prostitutes are often portrayed. The movie makes it plain that Roberts is ready to walk out of the relationship when she feels Gere isn’t giving her proper respect. The Raven is also very innovative. The story does not have a happy ending, because Lenore is lost, forever: when her lover asks the raven if he’ll be reunited with her in Aidenn (Eden), the raven promptly tells him "nevermore!" (Romantic stories often focused on eternity.) Another innovation in Raven is that it’s the man who’s the emotional wreck. Poe paints a haunting picture of Lenore’s bereaved lover. He’s "weak and weary." In the midnight hours, he’s reading old books in a vain attempt to forget his pain. He hears the curtain rustle and he’s terrified. (Romantic stories are often told from the perspective of a person who’s in an uncertain psychological state). Post your essay. Get expert feedback. For free. The weather was warm when we left personal statements for grad school, but it got colder as we got closer to the beach. The supposedly one-hour drive had already turned into a two-hour drive because of the horrendous traffic jam before the Bay Bridge toll plaza. I was upset because my beaten-up old car was starting to overheat, so I had to keep the heat turned up to avoid blowing the gasket. Driving in traffic like that could be very stressful. It didn't help that I had to repeatedly depress the heavy clutch just to move a few feet. I rarely got out of first gear. Yet her exuberance was completely unaffected by any of this, as if she were completely oblivious to what was going on outside of the car, other than the fact that she was on a way to have a picnic on the beach and watch the sunset over the ocean with her favorite person in the world. While my leg ached from the clutch, and I was hot and tired and angry at all the other cars on the road, she was singing and bouncing around in her seat, poking me and holding my hand and kissing me, and just being wonderfully excited about the day ahead. It was a sunny summer day in the east bay area, and I was just getting off work when she called me and suggested we have a picnic on the beach and watch the sunset over the ocean. It was late in July and I had been up at 5:30 that morning to get to work. My day at work wasn’t my favorite, and I wasn’t in the best mood when I finally got off around two o'clock. I went to her house to pick her up and nearly melted when I saw how excited she was to be going to the beach to have a picnic with me. She ran around to gather up the towels, and beach toys professional essay the best, and umbrella, and sunscreen. She was so lost in her excitement about going to the beach that she forgot her swimsuit! And her keys. And her wallet. And her phone. She probably wouldn’t have realized it unless I asked her when we were halfway there. I was glad she forgot her phone. We're trying to help students improve their writing the hard way. Hometown. Oak Park give the plural form of thesis, Illinois At the University of Virginia, I earned a doctoral degree in microbiology studying the molecular mechanisms regulating how the parasite Entamoeba histolytica causes disease. I presented my doctoral research at multiple national and international scientific conferences and the results of my work were published in two peer-reviewed scientific articles. As my doctoral studies were concluding and job prospects loomed, however, the realization hit that I was motivated by a desire to pursue a career that would allow me to broaden the range of scientific issues I worked on, rather than the narrow field in which I had specialized. I had been exposed to intellectual property law while taking a technology transfer course taught by a law professor in college, and conducted several informational interviews with attorneys practicing intellectual property law to decide if I should explore a career in this field. When I applied for Teach for America in the winter of 2009, it was more for the opportunity to leave the Rio Grande Valley than to accomplish the movement’s real mission of bringing a quality education to low-income students. A predominantly Mexican area with most families living under the poverty line, the Valley represented, for me, a place where ignorance met apathy, a place where people got what they deserved, and above all else, a place I refused to spend any more time in. I applied for major cities around the nation, but Teach for America had different plans for me, and when notifications were sent out at the end of March, I was placed as an elementary special education teacher in the Rio Grande Valley. And in what I could only chalk up to be divine intervention, I was hired at the same elementary school that I had attended. This is an exchange I heard often, one that took place between a visitor or passer-by and my mother about our horse, who wandered freely down the drive of the progressive school on our small farm in New Hampshire. Blackie, like the bull and most of the chickens, goats, ducks, and horses that have shared the wooded patches with nearly seventy children and their teachers each year, was adopted by our little school community. He lived outside the fence because it fit who he was. The right of people and animals, irrespective of status, to have the freedom to become who they are, to follow curiosities responsibly and study them deeply, is the core philosophy of this school that subtly yet enduringly formed and challenged me. Folding differing styles of learning into its world, this school was the backdrop to my home, shared with any child or animal needing its shelter for one or many nights. When I return there, I return to the cleaning of hens’ nesting boxes and the mucking of the barn, to working with students on their homework and joining their fun, and to playing my banjola and singing the songs I began composing on the grass as a little girl. My awareness of the workings of human rights was born in this small place. We all lived outside the fence. As a prospective advocate for those whose civil liberties have been marginalized, it is my goal to enhance and help protect the right of all humans to fair and equal treatment; to the access to knowledge through the nuance of embracing simple curiosities, and to have, as I did in that little school on my farm, the opportunity to follow those curiosities through understanding and study; to live outside the fence. It is by following my own curiosities that I earned my MSc in Human Rights degree at the London School of Economics, and it is there that I came to understand the philosophical and legal underpinnings of organizations like Tulgeywood and Reprieve. I have always wanted to be a lawyer, partly because both of my beloved grandfathers were, and my father is, as well, but my own life’s path is taking me to a focus on the discipline of human rights. I have come to believe that the future development of this body of law has the greatest potential to improve the quality of all aspects of human life. It is for these reasons that I am choosing law as the outlet for my commitment to human rights and Boston University, with its academic strength and reputation, as the educational vehicle to follow through on this commitment. Dismissing my father’s profession and familiar only with the glamorous side of medicine, I began college with one career in mind: physician. I dreamed of discovering the cure for AIDS show me an example cover letter, developing new treatments for cancer, and ridding the world of disease. However, early in my freshman year at the University of Pennsylvania, I found that the classes that piqued my interest and excited me the most were not biology lab or chemistry, but rather the classes I took through my major in health and societies; classes like American Health Policy, Biomedical Ethics, and Health Law. These courses opened my eyes to the realm of health care beyond patient diagnosis and treatment. For the first time, I became acutely aware of the millions of Americans who struggle to access or pay for basic health services. I was also introduced to the tremendous influence of law and policy in everyday medical issues. The breadth of topics in my health law class, as well as the law’s presence in my other courses, astounded me. Whether we were talking about patient consent in my bioethics class or insurance markets in Medical Economics, our discussion always circled back to the role of the law. What impressed me most, however, was the legal system’s potential to effect broad social change. Inspired, I started thinking that a career in health law would be the best way to impact not only my clients, but also my community, and even my country. The experience of growing up surrounded by people whose lives and dreams were disrupted by the strict communist regime fills me with a great desire to take full advantage of the opportunities available to me. I utilized the scholarship I received to attend an international school in Prague not only to study English, but also to learn as much as possible from my international classmates. This experience expanded my worldview and later prompted my decision to study abroad and travel. Continuously interacting with people from different cultures makes me an adaptive, confident, and effective communicator, and it helps me see any situation from various points of view. Being able to identify and evaluate possible options helps me find the right solutions to challenges and identify steps to fulfilling specific goals. It has also helped me find my own course to the study of law. Learning from experienced professionals at large international companies encourages me to take on increasingly challenging tasks. In my free time I manage the Czech branch of an international non-profit arts project related to theater. It gives students the opportunity to see theater performances for free, publish their reviews and articles on an international web portal, and receive guidance and feedback from experts and scholars in the field. I have now expanded the Prague team to include five reviewers, and I am always looking to involve more students in the project. I will continue to look for ways to provide learning opportunities and share knowledge with peers in order to contribute to the Boston University community. Examining emergency department chief complaint data reveals another set of problematic trends. Performing syndromic surveillance, I regularly see records of people who come to the emergency department with chronic conditions that they have had for years, but that have remained untreated because they cannot afford or access regular care. I also see how many individuals repeatedly misuse the emergency department as a resource. Rather than visiting a general practitioner, many poor and uninsured individuals come to the emergency department for primary care issues—colds, hangnails, back aches—because they cannot be denied treatment based on ability to pay. These are problems that cannot be fixed without a fundamental overhaul of our health care system. I was raised in the mountainous interior of Puerto Rico by parents who emphasized the importance of obtaining the best education possible. I attended a public residential high school with a curriculum specializing in math and science, where I excelled at learning about a variety of scientific disciplines and developed my passion for science. At age fifteen, I was selected to begin working in a research laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, as a participant in a summer program directed to motivating students to pursue careers in scientific research. My work focused on isolating and characterizing proteins that could be used for the diagnosis of, and vaccination against, two parasitic diseases. This transformative experience propelled my decision to pursue a career in scientific research. After high school, I continued working on the same research project while earning my Bachelor of Science degree in biology at the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras. My undergraduate experience was enriched by my selection to participate in a scientific exchange program, sponsored by the US National Institutes of Health, which funded my training in research laboratories at three distinguished research institutions: the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), Monash University (Australia), and the University of Salamanca (Spain). These global experiences not only helped cultivate my scientific skills, they also allowed me to gain a unique understanding of different cultures, peoples, and belief systems. I transferred out of the undergraduate degree in law I was pursuing in the United Kingdom to gain the skills, and most importantly the experience, I felt I needed in order to reach a deeper understanding of law theory and its application. As an English major at Boston University I developed skills in writing, research, critical reading and analysis. My second major in economics provided a solid background into the business setting within which law firms operate and prompted my interest in business and finance law. Later on, internships and full-time work tested this knowledge in a corporate environment. It was important to learn to apply classroom skills creatively and within tight deadlines. For example, managing the creation and release of company press releases at my first job after graduation demanded particularly good organization and time management. I had to identify interesting points worthy of mention in international media, make sure I understood the scientific data I was writing about and schedule the release of articles on time, while coordinating requests from several company departments. This gave me a strong sense of responsibility, as my writing was the voice of the entire company. I believe that continuing to apply this same work ethic will help me manage the rigorous demands of law school. Through their personal statements, current students share their greatest influences, professional aspirations, and why they applied to BU Law “The experience of growing up surrounded by people whose lives and dreams were disrupted by the strict communist regime fills me with a great desire to take full advantage of the opportunities available to me.” Hometown. I went to dinner thinking this has happened before, not too big of a deal, and then after went to the dorm and turned on the TV. It was arresting. I sat in front of CNN transfixed for 3 hours as if it was 10 minutes. I could not believe that just 5 days before I was with my grandparents at their house in Delmas, Haiti with my mom, dad topics for writing essays, and sister. My mother’s domain—the hospital where she worked as a practice manager of a cardiac surgery office—was a much more fascinating playground growing up. Despite being sick during most of my visits, I preferred spending time at the hospital to attending any conference. Between napping on her floor and drawing pictures for everyone in the office, I would watch live feed of the surgeons operating on an exposed heart or take trips to the morgue to view hearts with congenital abnormalities. That first day, I didn’t pick up a single child that wasn’t wearing dirty or ripped clothing. One was covered in bug bites. Another’s stomach growled as I walked the students through classroom rules and procedures. None smiled. I could not seem to wrap my mind around the fact that these students attended the same school that I so happily did not-so-many years before. By Thanksgiving, a brother and sister in my class scratched so hard at their wrists and fingers from poorly treated scabies that they’d return their assignments to me with small blood streaks staining the bottom. Stomachs still growled during my math lessons. But when a fifth-grade student told me she’d spent the night in a small bedroom closet, arms around her four younger siblings as her mother and father went at each other with broken bottles and angry fists, I could no longer stand it. I am very passionate about science and spent much of my academic life in research laboratories studying parasites that cause human disease. Recently, as a technical specialist at an intellectual property law firm sciences project, I discovered that I could successfully utilize the creative-thinking and analytical skills that I acquired as a scientist to help clients in the biotechnology sector protect their intellectual property. My experiences have solidified my commitment to law school, and I therefore write this statement to convince you of my resolve to merge my passions for science and law by becoming an attorney-scientist. “Yes, thank you. He lives outside the fence.” The academic dons who decided to place the Bacon quote under the western window intended that the idea would transcend the scholastic realm of its readers. Indeed, in my work as a financial analyst for a publicly traded company, it is often a professional touchstone. Though each day in the world of corporate finance is punctuated with deadlines and requests for instantaneous information, I am at my best as an analyst when I consider all of the data thoroughly and weigh the competing agendas. Like emulsified oil and vinegar that separate over time when left undisturbed, the right answer will emerge from among all of the wrong answers when I take the time to consider all of the possibilities. An extra hour spent analyzing an income statement can reveal even more trends than could a cursory glance. Moreover, the more I weigh and consider when I have the opportunity, the more I enhance the judgment I will need to make quick decisions and pronouncements when I do not have time. With inner vision sharpened by years of consideration, I am able to “see into the life of things example of an essay about happiness,” as Wordsworth described in writing of “Tintern Abbey.” Although my formal music education ended when I entered college, the lessons I have learned over the years have remained close and relevant to my life. I have acquired a lifestyle of discipline and internalized the drive for self-improvement. I have gained an appreciation for the complexities and the subtleties of interpretation. I understand the importance of having both a sound foundation and a dedication to constant study. I understand that to possess a passion and personal interest in something write essay toefl, to think for myself, is just as important. The turning point of my college football career came early in my third year. At the end of the second practice of the season, in ninety-five-degree heat, our head coach decided to condition the entire team. Sharp, excruciating pain shot down my legs as he summoned us repeatedly to the line to run wind sprints. I collapsed as I turned the corner on the final sprint. Muscle spasms spread throughout my body, and I briefly passed out. Severely dehydrated, I was rushed to the hospital and quickly given more than three liters of fluids intravenously. As I rested in a hospital recovery room, I realized my collapse on the field symbolized broader frustrations I felt playing college football. Looking back on that night, it is startling that I ended up volunteering as one of the guests’ dates. Whereas friends and family have always been quick to label me an overly confident extrovert, I spent years putting on a facade to hide a boy riddled with insecurities. Always finding myself the smallest, scrawniest boy in my class quickly wore out what confidence I had. Being the physical outlier amongst my peers affected my self-esteem more than I wanted to admit term papers for purchase, and although I did my best to hide my insecurity, even things as simple as asking a store clerk where the restroom is or ordering my own meal at a restaurant would make my knees weak with anxiety. Needless to say, a one-on-one date with someone I had never met—someone with a severe disability—was as far out of my comfort zone as I could possibly go. But I promised my close friends I would volunteer for the event, and by the time I signed up, all the behind-the-scenes jobs were taken. I had no other options. In the ample time my recovery allowed for reflection, I found solace in the fact that the abuse in my childhood fostered in me not bitterness, but an enduring dedication to fairness and justice. As a college student, this dedication led me to seek out classes in ethics and morality. As a manager and leader, I strive to display both courage and enduring fairness. My interest in the legal profession stems from my belief that laws represent the concrete expressions of justice and fairness in our society. Life is full of irony, and so it seems fitting that my crippling insecurity came face to face with a woman whose disability left her stranded with virtually no control over her own body. My feelings of alienation over a physical appearance I thought made me “too different” seemed childish and absurd, and it was that night that I finally realized just how rich my life was. This was more than an appreciation for everything I had been blessed with; it was a humbling realization that my success—what I ultimately achieve in life—is limited only by my capacity to believe in myself. EDUCATION: Johns Hopkins University, BA in International Relations, concentration East Asian Studies an essay on man summary, with honors (2007) Those months passed slowly. When I was finally able to start the process of rehabilitation, I made recovery my full-time job. I quickly learned that pain was to become the central reality of that year. The first day I could walk to my mailbox marked a significant achievement. Determined to return to full health, and even hoping to eventually return to riding, I gritted my teeth through the daily therapy sessions. At each subsequent visit, my doctor expressed his surprise at the progress of my recovery. Only twelve months after my injury, he cleared me to make a few careful runs on an easy, groomed slope. While I made it through those first few runs safely, they left me shaking with fear. To my rather naïve surprise, however, instead of setting the score for Für Elise on the piano stand before me, my piano teacher handed me a set of Beginner’s Books. I was to read through the Book of Theory, learn to read the basic notes of the treble and bass clefs, and practice, my palm arched as though an imaginary apple were cupped between my fingers, playing one note at a time. After I had mastered the note of “C,” she promised, I could move on to “D.” I fell in love for the first time when I was four. That was the year my mother signed me up for piano lessons. I can still remember touching those bright, ivory keys with reverence, feeling happy and excited that soon I would be playing those tinkling, familiar melodies (which my mother played every day on our boombox) myself. The challenge of collegiate athletics felt insurmountable. However, I reminded myself that at the Division I level I was able to compete with and against some of the best players in the country. While I might never start a game, the opportunity to discover and test my abilities had initially compelled me to choose a Division I football program. After the hospital visit, my football position coach—sensing my mounting frustrations—offered some advice. Instead of devoting my energies almost exclusively to physical preparation, he said, I should approach college football with the same mental focus I brought to my academic studies. I began to devour scouting reports and to analyze the complex reasoning behind defensive philosophies and schemes. I studied film and discovered ways to anticipate plays from the offense and become a more effective player. Armed with renewed confidence, I finally earned a starting position in the beginning of my fourth year. My team opened the season against Brigham Young University (BYU). I performed well despite the pressures of starting my first game in front of a hostile crowd of 65,000 people. The next day, my head coach announced the grade of every starting player’s efforts in the BYU game at a team meeting: “Mahoney—94 percent.” I had received the highest grade on the team. After three years of A’s in the classroom, I finally earned my first ‘A’ in football. I used mental preparation to maintain my competitive edge for the rest of the season. Through a combination of film study and will power, I led my team and conference in tackles. I became one of the best players in the conference and a leader on a team that reached the semi-finals of the Division I football playoffs. The most rewarding part of the season, though, was what I learned about myself in the process. When I finally stopped struggling to become the player I thought I needed to be, I developed self-awareness and confidence in the person I was. Plagued with cerebral palsy, Melissa was one of hundreds of adults with special needs who came that night for an evening of food, games, and dancing. I volunteered to accompany one of the guests as her date throughout the night’s various activities. The evening culminated in an hour or two on the dance floor, where I rocked and swayed Melissa to the sound of “Tiny Dancer,” and helped move her arms to the shouts of “Y-M-C-A!” It was one of the most memorable nights of my life, and I spent more than an hour of it standing in line, desperately trying to find a way out. In high school, I began playing the piano for church services. The music director gave me a binder full of 1-2-3 sheet music, in which melodies are written as numbers instead of as notes on a music staff. To make things a bit more interesting for myself—and for the congregation—I took to experimenting, pairing the written melodies with chords and harmonies of my own creation. I rarely played a song the same way twice; the beauty of improvisation, of songwriting, is that it is as much “feeling” as it is logic and theory. Different occasions and different moods yielded different results: sometimes, “Listen Quietly” was clean and beautiful in its simplicity; other times, it became elaborate and nearly classical in its passages. The basic melody and musical key, however, remained the same, even as the embellishments changed. The foundation of good improvisation and songwriting is simple: understanding the musical key in which a song is played—knowing the scale, the chords, the harmonies, and how well (or unwell) they work together—is essential. Songs can be rewritten and reinterpreted as situation permits, but missteps are obvious because the fundamental laws of music and harmony do not change. EDUCATION: University of Northern Iowa, BA in Economics and English, magna cum laude (2009) The years following September 11th were a true test of character for me. I learned how to feel comfortable in uncomfortable situations. This allowed me to become a dynamic and outgoing individual. This newfound confidence fueled a passion to become a leader and help uplift multiple minority communities. During the last two summers I made this passion a reality when I took the opportunity to work with underprivileged minority students. All of the students I worked with came from difficult backgrounds and many didn’t feel as though college was an option for them. I learned these students’ goals and aspirations, as well as their obstacles and hardships. I believed in them, and I constantly told them that they would make it. I worked relentlessly to make sure my actions matched my words of encouragement. I went well above the expectations of my job and took the initiative to plan several additional workshops on topics such as public speaking, time management, and confidence building. My extra efforts helped give these students the tools they needed to succeed. One hundred percent of the twenty-one high school juniors I worked with my first summer are now freshmen at four-year universities. I feel great pride in having helped these students achieve this important goal. I know that they will be able to use these tools to continue to succeed. July 10, 2010 4:48 PM Thanks for this Asha—I have started my PS with an anecdote that quotes my mom telling me when I was 17 to use my talents to make a difference instead of jumping on the bandwagon of doing this or that. Classic mom advice. Is the "don't quite your mom" advice universal, or just don't quote your mom speculating about things she doesn't know about? More importantly, ILTA shows a shallow understanding of what being a lawyer is about. You see, arguing is not the hallmark of a good lawyer. It's true that many lawyers are skilled orators, but that doesn't mean that they argue. In fact, the best way to find yourself with a losing case streak and a dwindling client list is to constantly argue with other lawyers or worse, the judge hearing your case. Legal communities are insular and well-connected; most lawyers, even those who litigate, have good relationships with the lawyers they oppose in court every day. This means that they can pick up the phone to resolve an issue, rather than having heated arguments in court. And if you've ever watched an appellate case, you know that the only people who should be arguing (if you're doing your job right) are the hearing judges, who are going to pick apart your case and ask you pointed and potentially snarky questions. You politely answer them. So, to sum up: avoid writing about how you love to argue, quoting your mom, or mentioning anything from preschool, and you'll be ahead of 10% of your peers from the get-go. That's it for this Boot Camp. More to come! September 8, 2010 11:41 AM July 2, 2010 1:15 PM OK, it's time to kick off my promised Personal Statement Boot Camp. which is designed to help you avoid some of the major mistakes I see in law school applications, and hopefully give you some ideas of how to make your P.S. better. I'm going to start with the theme I most dread reading every year, which I mentioned in one of my panel answers in a previous post. the "I Love to Argue" theme. Why is this theme so wrong? Let's first start with your mom. I'm sure she is a very nice person professional writing services company, but when it comes to law school admissions, please note that she has zero credibility. Don't mention any assessment she makes about your potential lawyerly ability in your P.S. Ever. Sue: Hmm. I wouldn't say quoting your mom is per se a bad idea if it ties in directly with a decision or experience you had that made you want to become a lawyer, but I would think about whether that was *really* a significant turning point for you (or are you just trying to figure out a way to open your P.S.?). Anecdotes with mom advice always strike me as a little contrived, so if there's another way to jump right into the substance of your P.S. I'd do that. @Ashley: I don't think this falls in the "I Love to Argue" category. But, if you intend to show that you are interested in Yale/law school because of the intellectual culture here, be sure to bring it back to you and your own specific intellectual interests, so we can see why you would be a good fit for this environment, and it for you. @Terrance: It's hard for me to answer your question, because you really need to write about what matters to you. But I'll just echo what I said to Courtenay, above: we are interested not only in getting great, diverse students, but also ones who we are confident have thought about why law school is the right next step. It doesn't help us, or any student essay dream job, to admit someone who changes her mind midway through law school or worse, graduates with a lot a debt and no heart in practicing law. Many students write very compelling essays about what has led them to law school specifically, even if they are based on purely personal or familial experiences. All things being equal, such an applicant would have a leg up over someone who writes a very general essay about why education is important. I was wondering how one ought to go about picking between a number of extra-curricular activities to elaborate on in the PS? (I know that you've cautioned us against copy-pasting the resume). So should one pick the most unusual or impressive ones? It seems like a lot of YLS admits were outstanding in some way graduate essays for admissions, so is being involved in a student club less impressive than presenting at a conference? Also, is one's undergraduate career used as an indicator of the kind of trajectory one will have in law school? (So an undergrad editor might do something similar as a law student etc.) Thank you! It leaves you feeling tired, frustrated, and wondering whether you’ve actually learned anything at all, despite all that time you spent in class. Simply put: take some time (right now would be good) to block off an hour or two each day for homework in your schedule. Make sure you have consistent time blocked off to do your homework. First, jump into solving problems as quickly as possible (start “hard learning” right off the bat). It was created by the illuminati to keep the student population in a state of fear. So now that you have your calendar in order, let’s get your study space in order as well. Finally, our 2-step process: A quick caveat before we jump in: there are no magic bullets. You’re not going to be able to understand everything right away. This may seem utterly obvious romeo and juliet essays about love, but sometimes it’s the simple things that make all the difference: “A cluttered desk means a cluttered mind.” And yes, Limitless was a very cool movie, but I don’t have a tiny clear pill for you – you’re going to need to put in the work. And as we covered in Section 1, willpower is critical when it comes to staying focused, and powering through difficult learning (a.k.a. problem sets). A nice side effect of a clean, organized, standardized homework spot is it almost guarantees you will be less distracted by default.
